ImageAbout Essex Wildlife Trust: Why visit Essex Wildlife Centres and Nature Reserves ?
“Essex is Breathing Place is somewhere you can escape the hassles of everyday life, get your hands dirty, listen to bird - song and admire the natural world. Essex is blessed with a rich and varied wildlife heritage. It is arguably most famous for its long and sometimes barren coastline that many can enjoy: the rivers, some wonderful ancient woodland, mosaic and grassland, important brownfield sites and coastal grazing marshes. However there is more to Essex than this, with heaths, wetlands and important wildlife corridors scattered throughout the county within the wider farmed countryside. These beautiful and often vulnerable wild places are not static and have evolved gradually over thousands of years in response to climate, soil, water and the impact of humans.”

Parax Stone Paper is Shortlisted for European Business Awards for the Environment 2014

PRESS RELEASE
Image
RSA Announces UK Entrants for European Business Awards
The RSA Environment Awards Forum has announced the 12 UK Entrants selected as finalists for the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE). With 6 of the entrants being Scottish businesses, the announcement was made at the Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh, in conjunction with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
The EBAE recognises outstanding, new or innovative contributions to sustainable development and the UK finalists will compete for a prize against winners from 28 other countries on the European stage.
UK Entrants for Europe are selected from the winners and runners up of RSA Accredited award schemes. RSA Accreditation is only achieved by a select number of environmental and sustainable award schemes, who demonstrate the high standards expected by the RSA’s Environment Awards Forum. This means that those chosen for Europe are ‘the best of the best’; the most far-sighted, responsible and innovative companies from across the country.
Image
The UK has had at least an award winner in every EBAE since 1994.
The biennial EBAE is comprised of four award categories in which companies are rewarded for; outstanding new or innovative management practices, products, processes and international co-operation activities which contribute to economic and social development without detriment to the environment. An additional award was introduced in 2012 for biodiversity; selected from entrants to the other categories.
Dr Malcolm Aickin, Chair of the RSA Environment Awards Forum, said “The UK Entrants for the 2014 EBAE have been selected from the winners of 6 of the 13 UK Accredited Award Schemes. The UK has always made an excellent showing in Europe providing significantly more winners than any other European Country. This year the entrants represent a very broad range of activity and diversity of achievement. Their collective strength gives high hopes that our winning record will continue.”
All of the UK Entrants will now go forward to the European finals, to be held later this year.

RSA Accreditation
The RSA Environment Awards Accreditation Scheme has been in operation for the past 12 years, with the aim of helping to differentiate the large number of award schemes currently in existence. It does this by accrediting awards to objective standards, ensuring that there is a benchmark for those that reward real progress towards sustainability.
Currently 13 award schemes in the UK are accredited by the RSA and are the only feeder schemes that can submit entries into the European Commission’s biennial European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE). The prestigious EBAE awards play a crucial role in demonstrating progress on environmental and sustainable development issues worldwide.
EBAE Awards
The European Business Awards for the Environment are awarded by the European Commission every two years and aim to recognise and reward European companies which set an example by successfully bringing together innovation, economic viability, environmental considerations and social equity.
The scheme comprises four award categories in which companies are rewarded for outstanding new or innovative management practices, products, processes and international co-operation activities which contribute to economic and social development without detriment to the environment. An additional award was introduced in 2012 for biodiversity; selected from entrants to the other categories.
To be eligible for the European Business Awards for the Environment, companies first have to win a national award from amongst the schemes which are organised in individual European Union member countries every year. This means that the companies awarded the European prize are ‘the best of the best’; the most far-sighted, responsible and innovative across Europe. In the UK entries are selected from the winners of Accredited Award Schemes. Details of these can be found at
Participation is open to companies from all EU member states and Turkey. The submission of entries to the European awards competition is managed by national coordinating bodies. In the UK the coordinator is the Royal Society of Arts for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) on behalf of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs DEFRA).

Parax Stone Paper Review by Reviewify

reviewify-logo-full-text-and-domain-3921

” Stationary. What could be new in the world of stationery? Not the most exciting subject in most situations, at least until a company called Parax came along to rip up the tree paper rulebook and replace it with a stone paper one instead. You read that correctly, paper made of stone!
Parax are a company that many may remember from Dragon’s Den, a UK TV show allowing people looking for investment to pitch their idea to people looking to invest. Since that first outing the product range has grown and Parax has beaten over 500 companies to become the UK 2013 Green Champion, but the core message has remained: switching to stone paper can have a seriously positive impact for the environment. This message is clear on every product, for example on the back page of a notebook, and the key points are:
    • No Bleach is used in the production of stone paper
    • No water is used in the production of stone paper
    • No trees are used in the production of stone paper
Image

For those of you not overly fussed by eco credentials there are real world user benefits to switching to stone paper. Although it looks the same as tree paper it feels far nicer; It has a silky, premium, feel to it and it’s luxurious to write on. In day to day use this is the only difference you’re likely to notice…that is until you spill your drink on it or get caught in the rain, or decide to go for a swim. Unlike tree paper stone paper doesn’t disintegrate into a soggy mess when it gets wet, in fact it doesn’t do anything at all! It’s so resistant to water you can actually take a pencil and continue to write on the stone paper while it’s submerged in water, making it ideal for anyone that fancies a little scuba-sketching.
But that’s not the only advantage over traditional tree paper, it’s also much stronger and less likely to be ripped accidentally. Even when submerged in water it retains it’s strength, meaning if you do spill a drink, get caught in the rain or accidentally drop the pad into a puddle all you’ll need to do is flick the water off and it’s ready to use again.
Parax have taken stone paper and come up with a great range of products, including pocket notebooks, gift bags and notepads. They come in different shapes, sizes and styles, so there is something for everyone, and all retain the core benefits of stone paper. You’d expect these products to cost a lot more given the benefits, but a quick look on Amazon revealed that compared to an equivalent product (i.e. a decent tree paper product) there isn’t much difference in price, meaning there really isn’t a reason not to make the switch.

And having tested a number of these products I can confirm that messing about with paper and water doesn’t get old. These are great products to show off, people will stare at your in amazement like you’ve just performed a magic trick.
A quick review of the Parax website reveals that you can also request your own brand stationary, making this perfect for those looking for eco friendly company branded stationary that has additional benefits of being waterproof, take note people in charge of Fire Brigade stationary!
Parax have come up with a genuine innovation in stationary, premium products without a massive price tag. In purchasing a Parax stone paper product you get superior stationary and Parax can continue to reduce the environmental impact of producing products, it’s win-win.”

The Chinese New Year will bring in the Green Horse!

Sign of things to come: everything will go Green in 2014

2014 is the Year of Wooden Horse. Wood is related to tree and green, therefore 2014 is also called Year of Green Horse.

We at Parax Towers take this as good omen (not that we are superstitious or anything) for more “Green” awareness, consideration, actions from the world Governments and people.  Hopefully it will be a better year for trees.
